Steve Stein
A professor of history at the University of Memphis, Stephen K. Stein’s primary research interests are the U.S. military, technology, and sexuality. His book Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States: Kinky People Unite (2021) is the first (and still only) comprehensive history of BDSM and American BDSM organizations. His other publications include The Sea in World History: Exploration, Travel, and Trade (2017), Twenty-Five Years of Living in Leather: The National Leather Association, 1986-2011 (2012), Teaching History Online (2023), Military Strategy for Writers (2023), and many others. His article “The Greely Relief Expedition and the New Navy,” International Journal of Naval History 5 (December 2006) won the Rear Admiral Ernest M. Eller Prize in Naval History. He has presented at conferences ranging from Living in Leather and Spring Iniquity to the American Historical Association.
