Discrimination against LGBTQ persons, especially trans people has increased greatly, which has led to an uptick in hate crimes. Numerous laws have been passed in states around the nation targeting trans people by denying health care, transitional care, and other vital services. Slavewife Tara will discuss how such laws have affected her and others in the trans community. Families are leaving red states to escape these laws and protect their and their children’s health. In these states, many Republican politicians are using trans hate as part of their fundraising and campaigning efforts to get elected. They are aided in their efforts to harm trans people by religious fundamentalist ministers who are calling for draconian measures such as total denial of healthcare, in the hopes of seeing the trans population disappear entirely.

Due to the current political climate, anti-trans sentiment is at a high, and LGBTQ people are being attacked and killed at increasing rates. Why are these laws permitted? What happened to doctor-patient confidentiality? Why is the so-called party of limited government so concerned with regulating individuals’ bodies from what gender they are to whom they love to whether they can end a pregnancy or not? What can we do about this? Fighting these unconstitutional laws in the courts, where we have had victories and successfully overturned some already, is only the first step.
